“It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.” – Henry David Thoreau
While researching U.S.-China relations on January 17, 2025, I came across this headline in the Wall Street Journal:
“U.S. Shrugs As World War III Approaches.” It’s an opinion piece by Walter Russell Mead published September 16, 2024. Mead discusses the report issued by the Commission on the National Defense Strategy in July, 2024. The Commission’s report is alarming. It begins:
“The threats the United States faces are the most serious and most challenging the nation has encountered since 1945 and include the potential for near-term major war. The United States last fought a global conflict during World War II, which ended nearly 80 years ago. The nation was last prepared for such a fight during the Cold War, which ended 35 years ago. It is not prepared today.”(1)
As I’m reading Mead’s opinion piece, a “breaking news” banner pops up at the top of the page. Here’s the screen shot(2):

Let’s review: no one is talking about the fact that the risk of the U.S. being involved in a direct major conflict is elevated and the U.S. is not prepared. But the inauguration being moved from outdoors to indoors is breaking news and demands attention.
We’re concerned about the Commission’s report. And we’re doubly concerned about the country’s reaction to it. Let’s hope we get some attention to both issues soon.
